One of my favorite Hindi movies of all time is Queen. The story revolves around a traditional family girl who has never set her foot out of her comfort zone and now decided to tour Europe on her own. Ajji is a movie that will shake you to your core. It’s a story of revenge. The plot revolves around a poor and frail old woman. When her little granddaughter “Manda” is sexually assaulted by a powerful man, and no justice is served, the grandmother plots her violent revenge. Check out Ajji on Netflix
7. Bareilly ki Barfi (2017)
Released in 2017, Bareilly ki Barfi is a movie which will tickle your funny bones in all the right places. Boasting of a talented star cast including Ayushmann Khurrana, Kriti Sanon, Rajkummar Rao, and my favorite Pankaj Tripathi, the story revolves around Bitti who is a free-spirited small-town girl who lives her life on her own terms. What happens to her when she meets Chirag Dubey (Ayushman) and Pritam Vidrohi (Rajkumar Rao) is the whole movie. This one is an entertainment bomb.

14. Baahubali (2015) and Bahubali 2 (2017)
Baahubali and its sequel Baahubali 2 are probably the most hyped movies of India and deservedly so. No movie has ended on such a cliffhanger as Baahubali. The period drama featuring Prabhas has been directed by the critically acclaimed, S.S. Rajamouli. While this is not technically a Bollywood movie, it was made in collaboration with Dharma Production, and I had to include it on this list.
15. Dear Zindagi (2016)
I had stopped expecting good movies from Shahrukh Khan after Chennai express and I was mostly right. However, the release of Dear Zindagi changed all that. If Gurgaon didn’t succeed in dwindling your faith in humanity, Anurag Kashayp’s 2013 thriller Ugly will. You will learn how low humans can get to achieve what they want in their lives. If a killer mystery thriller is what you are after, give serious consideration to Kahaani. Co-written, produced, and directed by Sujoy Ghosh, the movie follows the life of a pregnant woman (Vidya Bagchi) showcasing her endless struggle to find her missing husband. Aside from Vidya Balan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has also played a significant role in the movie. It won critical acclaim for exploring themes of feminism and motherhood in a society largely dominated by males. Moreover, the screenplay and cinematography also received high praise for being classy.

30. The Sky Is Pink (2019)
Should you wish to go for a heart-touching biographical movie, “The Sky Is Pink” could be worth checking out. The film is about the family of Aisha Chaudhary, a 14-year old motivational speaker who died due to pulmonary fibrosis. 31. Dangal (2016)
I don’t think there are too many Bollywood sports films that are as memorable as Dangal. Mr. perfectionist “Aamir Khan” has excelled in his role as a former wrestler (Mahavir Singh) who pursues the gold medal he never won by training his two strong-willed daughters named Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. Set in the Indian state of Haryana, the film is loosely based on the Phogat family and its tryst with the coveted medals at the Commonwealth Games. Beyond the story, Pritam’s music and Amitabh Bhattacharya’s lyrics are also worthy of praise.

32. Jaane tu Ya Jaane Na (2008)
Jaane tu Ya Jaane Na is a comedy love story and one of the best feel-good movies in Bollywood. When the movie was released back in 2008, it became a sensation among teenagers, and it still is one of the best romantic comedies produced by Bollywood.
The story revolves around two friends who don’t believe that they love each other. And to prove others wrong, they promise to find romantic partners for each other. However, once they succeed in their mission, they slowly realize that they loved each other after all. The storyline is basic, but the comedic punches and songs are great.
If you love Bollywood masala flicks, you are going to enjoy his one a lot.

33. Guru (2006)
Guru showcases that Abhishek Bacchan is not as inept an actor as everyone thinks him to be. Guru is loosely based on the life of Dhiru Bhai Ambani — the founder of Reliance. It’s not a biography but takes a lot of inspiration from his life. It showcases the rise of a villager, who comes to Bombay of 1958, and rises to become the biggest industry tycoon of the country.
I enjoyed watching this movie tremendously. The script is tight and the casting is perfect. Abhishek Bachhan kills it as the main character Gurukant Desai, and so does Aishwarya Rai as her wife. Add Mithun Chakraborty, R. Madhavan, Vidya Balan, and more such talented supporting actors, and you get a gripping story performed by masterful actors and actresses.
The final feather in the crown is the music scored by A. R. Rahman and lyrics by Gulzaar. Guru’s music will make you smile, laugh, and cry. It will take you on a journey. It complements the movie and doesn’t take you out of it. If you have not watched Guru before, I highly urge you to watch it.

34. Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)
Bhool Bhulaiyaa is the sort of movie that you will enjoy watching time and again. This comedy horror film is an official remake of the 1993 Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu. The movie is about an NRI and his wife who decide to live in an ancestral house ignoring the warnings about ghosts. And when unexpected things start taking place, he has to take the help of a psychiatrist (Akshay Kumar) to solve the mystery. Due mainly to the fascinating story, the film received universal critical acclaim and also proved to be a massive hit. Moreover, Vidya Balan’s performance is considered one of her best.

35. Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran (2018)
For the folks who are on the lookout for a scintillating historical action drama film, “Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran” appears to be a fine bet. The film is directed by Abhishek Sharma and features John Abraham, Diana Penty and Boman Irani in major roles. If you haven’t already guessed it, let me tell you that it’s based on the nuclear bomb test explosions conducted by the Indian Army at Pokhran in 1998 during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government. In a nutshell, Parmanu is an ode to the amazing bravery of the Indian Army and the resolute scientists.

36. Rang de Basanti (2006)
Rang de Basanti is probably my most favorite Bollywood movie of all time. Not only the movie has a good story and excellent acting, but it’s also a masterpiece of the craft of movie-making itself. The way this movie cuts between its two main timelines is exquisite. You never feel out of the place, and every sequence fits perfectly.
Talking about the plot, it’s a story of Indian Youth and how they reconnect with their past. The story revolves around six young Indians who assist an English Woman to film a documentary on the freedom fighters. As they are filming the documentary, they learn about the sacrifices that were made to make this country and the responsibilities that have been placed on us to move this country forward.
The legendary Mr. A. R. Rahman has scored the movie so you know the music is going to be great. If you love a thought-provoking movie that makes you rethink your life choices, this is the movie for you.
Check out Rang de Basanti on Netflix
37. Kai Po Che (2013)
Kai Po Che is one of the best Bollywood movies that you can watch on Netflix. On its surface the story is about three friends who want to open a cricket Academy in Ahmadabad. But once you start watching it, you will realize that it has far deeper themes of friendship, love, and life. Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel — 3 Mistakes of My Life — Kai Po Che is a must watch for every Bollywood lover.

38. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017)
As a satirical comedy, “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” has lived up to my billing. And rightly so as the movie is a pretty interesting representation of government campaigns to improve sanitation conditions in India with the sole focus on the elimination of the open defecation. With an impressive cast led by the likes of Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Anupam Kher, and Sudhir Pandey, the film succeeds in highlighting India’s toilet problem with a great mix of love and comedy. So, it deserves a shot in this roundup of the top Bollywood movies on Netflix.
Check out Toilet: Ek Prem Katha on Netflix
39. 3 Idiots (2009)
No matter how many times you have streamed 3 Idiots, you may fall for it every time it’s on the horizon. So, I’m not going to miss out on this coming-of-age comedy-drama that’s undoubtedly one of the best Bollywood movies on Netflix. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film features Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, and Boman Irani in major roles. As for the plot, it revolves around three students at an Indian engineering college giving a satirical touch to the social pressures under an Indian education system.
Check out 3 Idiots on Netflix
40. Tamasha (2015)
If a modern romantic film is what you are willing to stream, Tamasha would be my recommendation for multiple reasons. First and foremost, this movie is about real-life ex-flames: Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The film (directed by Imtiaz Ali) is set around Ved Vardhan Sahni (Ranbir) and showcases his life in three different stages: a nine-year-old child, a 19-year-old teenager, and a 30-year-old adult. With A.R Rahman’s soundtrack and Irshad Kamil’s lyrics, Tamasha won’t fail to touch your heart, should you have a penchant for romantic flicks.
Check out Tamasha on Netflix
41. Article 15 (2019)
Article 15 is a gem of a movie. It showcases the cast-divide that is still plaguing rural India. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the movie stars Ayushman Khurrana in the role of an IPS officer. He is transferred to a rural area, where he fights to bring justice to a strange case of missing girls and breaks the social prejudices in the process. The movie title is taken from Article 15 of the Indian constitution that abolished any discrimination based on religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth, or any of them. My favorite thing about this movie is that it doesn’t show any heroism. Ayushman Khurrana works with the resources he has and solves the case like a normal police officer. You are going to enjoy this one.
Check out Article 15 on Netflix
42. Qarib Qarib Single (2017)
Since the day Irfan Khan left us, I have been binge-watching all his movies, just to relive those memories. One of the unexpected Irfan Khan films that I enjoyed a lot was Qarib Qarib Single. Released in 2017, Qarib Qarib Single shows the story of Yogi and Jaya, who have polar opposite personalities and sensibilities. They meet on an online dating service. Circumstances happen and they both travel together to meet, Yogi’s (played by Irfan Khan) three ex-girlfriends. Drama and comedy ensue, and the movie ends like any other romantic comedy. Despite not liking the rom-com genre, I enjoyed watching this movie a lot. And if you love rom-coms, this is a treat for you.
Check out Qarib Qarib Single on Netflix
43. Khosla ka Ghosla (2006)
Khosla ka Ghosla is more than a decade old and it remains one of my favorite movies of all time. The story follows Kamal Kishore Khosla (Anupam Kher), a middle-class Delhiite and his family’s attempt to reclaim their land which has been seized by a builder named Khurana (Boman Irani). But the best performance of the movie and the one who steals the show is Vinay Pathak. His dialogue delivery is exceptional. Talking about the movie, on the surface the plot seems simple, but the story built on top of this plot is exceptional. This is a must-watch for any movie lover and I can guarantee you are going to enjoy every second of it.
Check out Khosla ka Ghosla on Netflix
44. Haraamkhor (2015)
Haraamkhor tells the story of a relationship between a teacher (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and his teenage student (Shweta Tripathi). Shyam (Nawaz) is a school teacher who takes advantage of his student Sandhya’s (Tripathi) circumstances, to initiate a relationship. Sandhya comes from a broken family (his father is a drunk police officer – no mother in the picture), and it’s easy for Shyam to get her interested. The story becomes complex when Sandhya’s classmates discover the relationship. It’s not an exceptional movie but the performance of both Nawaz and Shweta is great, and you will enjoy the experience.
Check out Haraamkhor on Netflix
45. Dev D
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s masterpiece Devdas (based on a novel with the same name by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay) is a masterpiece that should never get a remake. Its beauty is something intangible that can never be captured. And thankfully, Anurag Kashyap has not tried to do that in his movie Dev D. Instead, he has given his modern take on the novel and created a gem. Think of it as BBC’s Sherlock. It takes the same old story but places it in the confinement of modern society. Both the story adaptation and the music are phenomenal. You are going to watch this one again and again.
Check out Dev D on Netflix
