How to Create Repeating Patterns in Photoshop

Must read

Repetitive patterns while designing ensure you don’t have to draw or paste an object multiple times with several flaws. Simply creating a pattern and then implementing it makes a task relatively easier and looks quite better than other practices.

Repeating patterns in Photoshop is required when you have to create some tiles or a design similar to mandala arts. While the repeated patterns in a design might look complex to non-professionals, the process is quite easy. Repeating patterns help a design to achieve its real potential. To repeat the patterns in Photoshop, the three major steps are creating a single tile, saving it as the original one, and then, copying it to repeat it across the layer. To conclude, you can add attractive gradients and colors to your design.

Once you create a pattern, you can fill it on any document multiple times.

In this article today, we are going to have detailed insights on repeating patterns in Photoshop. Let’s start:

How to Create Repeating Patterns in Photoshop?

Designs with repeating patterns are used in fabrics, wallpapers, and backgrounds. This is how you can start creating an effective design with repeated patterns:

1. Creating a New Document

We will start by creating a new document for the original design that we will be repeating. Simply, head to the top menu bar click on the File, and then “New”. This will open a new window where you can set up the resolution, presets, height, and width of the new document.

For this post, I have created a document with a width of 1,439 Pixels and a height of 698 Pixels. You can also keep your background transparent. Once you are done with the parameters, click on create to start. You will see a white document if you have opted for solid background or a checked document for transparent background. Since I have opted for a solid background, I have a white document:

2. Adding Rulers to the Document

Setting up rulers in the document helps you in understanding the orientation and finding the center of the document. Go to the top menu bar and click on “View” to explore the options and click on “Ruler”. This will add rulers on the left and top borders of the document. You can easily drag the rulers to know about the center:

3. Starting With Repeating the Patterns

Select an image or design you wish to create as a repeating pattern. To keep it neat and clean, you should choose a single object for repeating. You can either drag and drop the image to the document or simply paste it using “Ctrl+V”:

Now, we have to duplicate the layer. There are multiple methods for duplicating a layer. Simply, head to the Layers panel and drag the layer to the “+” icon given at the bottom. Duplicating a layer will provide us with a layer that we will be using further for creating a repeating pattern.

4. Offset Filter

Now, we have to apply the Offset Filter. The Offset Filter helps in creating seamless patterns in Photoshop. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Filter and then others. Click on Offset to apply the filter.

A pop-up window will appear where you have to enter certain parameters. For better results, enter the dimensions of sliders half of the document’s dimensions. Along with the dimensions, also select “Wrapping around” and then, press “OK”:

5. Defining the Pattern

By now, you should see the pattern coming into the state. To implement it properly, we have to define the pattern. Head to the top menu bar and click on the “Define Pattern” option. A box will appear on the screen, asking to name the pattern before saving it. This will save the pattern, and now, all you have to do is to apply it.

6. Applying the Pattern

Create a new document where you want to implement the pattern. Make sure the document you create is large enough to fill the pattern properly. Go to the Edit option on top of the document and click on “Fill”. In the window that appears, select a pattern in content and then choose your saved pattern to apply. Click on the “OK” button, and you will see your pattern all over the document:

Creating repeated patterns on documents can be applied when working on designs for garments and wallpapers. Textile industries have experts hired who only work on creating repeating patterns. Other than textiles, they are used in wallpapers and create attractive background screens. Just 6 simple steps and you are good enough to go. So, this was all about working on repeating patterns. You can try creating more patterns to familiarize yourself with the steps. I hope you found this article helpful.
