iPhone 13 lineup may help Apple beat Samsung in this display race

Must read

Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is set to beat Samsung as the largest purchaser of AMOLED displays for smartphones, according to a report by DigiTimes.

The South Korean tech giant is expected to increase its requirement from 152.3 million pieces for smartphones to 157 million, whereas Apple is expected to increase its AMOLED panels to 169 million pieces for iPhones in 2021 from 114.5 million in 2020.

This exponential rise in the demand by Apple is set to happen this year courtesy the iPhone 13 lineup. With the upcoming lineup, the adoption of flexible AMOLED displays in iPhones is set to cross 80%, as per DigiTimes.

Apple for the first time introduced an all-AMOLED display line-up with the launch of the iPhone 12 series in 2020 and there is expected to be no change in this regard this year too.

The DigiTimes report cites estimation numbers from research firm Omdia to forecast that Apple may beat Samsung as the larger purchaser of the AMOLED displays for smartphones.

The report, however, sees Samsung retain its position as the largest supplier of AMOLED panels for iPhones in 2021. The company is said to offer an estimated 110 million pieces of such displays to the iPhone maker, which is much higher than LG Display’s 50 million and BOE‘s nine million.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Apple is looking at ways to make the iPhone smoother and may use LTPO displays with variable refresh rates in its upcoming iPhone 13 series that can dramatically increase the touch-responsive improving the overall experience.
