iPhone: $50 million worth of Apple iPhones, iPads, Watches smuggled by airline crew members: Report

Eight Aeroflot Airlines employees have been arrested in the US for allegedly smuggling $50 million worth of costly electronic devices including Apple iPhones, iPads, and Watches to Russia.
According to a release by the United States Attorney Office for the Eastern District of New York, 10 employees of the Aeroflot Airlines have been charged for the offence. While eight of them have been arrested, 2 others are deemed fugitives. Also, the Department of State has revoked visas of 113 Aeroflot employees suspected to be part of the smuggling racket.
The accused are Akmal Asadov, Sayuz Daibagya, Anton Perevoznikov, Shohruh Saidov, Marat Shadkin, Kirill Sokhonchuk, Azamat Bobomurodov and Zokir Iskanderov.
The case was jointly investigated by FBI, Customs and Border Protection, the New York City Police Department. During the investigation, the luggage of the accused crew members was found to contain the said electronic devices worth millions, “many of which” were stolen, as per the release. The crew members are alleged to have smuggled $50 million worth “via cash and merchandise” from the US to Russia “via airline passengers, including current and former Aeroflot Airlines employees.”
Seth D DuCharme, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, in the release, said, “As alleged, the defendants were members of an international smuggling ring that used a network of operators here and in Russia to circumvent the US export laws and regulations.”
