With less than one month to Reliance Jio’s next big phone–JioPhone Next– launch in partnership with Google, more details about features and software have emerged. Mishaal Rahman, editor of XDA Developers, took to Twitter to reveal some likely specifications of the JioPhone Next. This 4G-enabled device is likely to be the most affordable Android smartphone in India which will launch on September 10. Reliance JioPhone Next aims to be the low-cost 4G-enabled Android mobile option for those who can’t afford smartphones in India and are still stuck with 2G feature phones. In India, there are around 300 million 2G feature phone users. Here’s what to expect in terms of specifications from the JioPhone Next.
What will be the operating system of JioPhone Next
The JioPhone Next will be powered by Google’s Android Go operating system based on Android 11. Android Go platform is primarily meant for low-end devices which comes with basic hardware configuration.
Is Android Go similar to the regular Android operating system
With Android Go, users will get basic Android phone experience. While they will get access to Google’s services, software updates, Google Assistant and ability to download apps from Google Play store, note that access to all apps will not be there. Due to hardware limitations, users may not be able to download popular games, streaming apps, etc. Having said that users will get access to all Go versions of popular Google apps. Low-end chipset, limited RAM and storage will prevent the JioPhone Next to be a full-fledged regular Android phone.
What apps will JioPhone Next users get
JioPhone Next users will be able to download apps from Google Play store. The apps that are compatible with hardware features of the phone can be downloaded only. JioPhone Next will offer Google Assistant voice support. Using App Actions, users can utilise Google Assistant with Jio apps on this device to know latest cricket scores or a weather update, users can also ask Google Assistant to play music on JioSaavn or check their balance on My Jio.
What will be processor of JioPhone Next
The JioPhone Next will most likely be powered by a low-end chipset from Qualcomm. As per the tweets by Rahman, the device may be powered by the Qualcomm QM215 platform. It features a 64-bit CPU and dual ISP support.
What will be the RAM and storage feature of JioPhone Next
As it’s an Android Go-powered device, the phone is expected to come with less than 2GB RAM. As for storage, you can expect it to be 32GB or 64GB. Also, there may be an option for a microSD card slot.
What will be the camera specifications of JioPhone Next
The JioPhone Next will come with a single lens camera at the back with 13MP sensor along with an 8MP camera on the front for selfies. The default camera app will be Google Camera Go. Google and Jio’s teams have partnered to build an optimised experience within the phone’s camera module for clear photos and videos in low-light situations along with HDR mode that brings out wider color and dynamic range in photos. Google has also partnered with Snap to integrate Indian-specific Snapchat Lenses directly into the phone’s camera.
What will be the display specifications of JioPhone next
The device may come with a display size of anywhere in between 5.5-inch and 6-inch. As for the resolution, the phone is expected to offer 1440×720 pixels HD resolution.

While there’s no information around the exact battery specs, the device may come with a battery capacity in the range of 3,000mAh and 4,0000mAh. As for battery life, you can expect the device to last you one full day. Reports also claim that the JioPhone Next will be a dual SIM phone.
How will the JioPhone Next smartphone look like
The JioPhone Next may come with a touch screen display of around 5-inch with thick bezels on the bottom and top part. The design is similar to Android smartphones from 2012. There may be a single camera at the back with LED Flash along with a selfie camera on the front. It will most likely be a dual SIM phone with support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and more.
What will be the likely price of JioPhone Next
The JioPhone Next is expected to be a sub-$50 smartphone and may be launched at a price of under Rs 3,500. Reliance Jio may also look at further incentivising the device through carrier deals and financing options.
