Will Windows 11 Be a Free Upgrade? All You Need to Know!

Must read

Windows 11 is about to go official in a week, and a preview build has already leaked online, and now we have a good idea of what is to come. In fact, we installed the leaked Windows 11 build on our Windows 10 laptop, and it worked flawlessly well. With that said, if you are wondering whether Windows 11 will be a free upgrade for Windows 10, 8, and 7 users, we have good news for you. We have done thorough research and found some irrefutable evidence that suggests that Windows 11 free upgrade is coming to Windows 10, 8, and 7 users. To learn more about this in detail, let’s dive right in.

Will Windows 11 Be a Free Upgrade to Windows 10, 8, and 7 Users?

Although Windows 11 has not been announced officially, all evidence currently points to a free upgrade to Windows 11 for all Windows 10, 8.1, 8, and 7 users.

As reported by XDA Developers, evidence suggests that just like Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users were offered a free upgrade to Windows 10, Microsoft will take the same route for Windows 11’s mass adoption. Users who already have a digital or OEM license tied to their PC will not have to buy a new activation key for Windows 11.

To corroborate the evidence, we found that pkeyconfig-downlevel.xrm-ms  and pkeyconfig.xrm-ms on Windows 11 indeed mentions all editions of Windows 10, 7, 8, and 8.1. The supported editions are as follows:

Windows 10

  • Education
  • Professional
  • Home
  • Server
  • Enterprise
  • Andromeda (Foldable? Surface Neo?)
  • HubOS
  • Holographic
  • IoT
  • Lite
  • Cloud

Windows 7

  • Home Basic
  • Home Premium
  • Professional
  • Starter
  • Ultimate
  • SP1

Windows 8.1

  • Core
  • Professional
  • Student

Windows 8

Note that it’s not an exhaustive list as we have curated this from a recently leaked Windows 11 build (#21996). When Microsoft officially announces Windows 11 on June 24th, we will get a better idea of what is to come.

Anyway, to really test if Windows 10 updates to Windows 11 with my license intact, I ran the Windows 11 installer, and lo and behold, I successfully moved to Windows 11 without any issue whatsoever. My license is intact, I can move back to Windows 10, and all my files, apps, and preferences are untouched. So yeah, if you wanted a demo as to what the Windows 11 upgrade will look like in the coming months, this is it.

Windows 10, 7, 8 & 8.1 Users are Likely to Receive Free Windows 11 Upgrade

So that was our deep dive into the question of whether Windows 10, 8, or 7 users will get the Windows 11 update for free or not. As I demonstrated above, it’s almost certain that all Windows users will be able to taste the fresh UI elements of Windows 11. Anyway, that is all from us.
